The Franconian Forest covers a total of some 100,000 hectares the majority of which is designated nature park and thus subject to conservation protection. The forest borders Thuringia to the north, the Vogtland and the Fichtel Mountains to the east, the region known as Franconian Switzerland to the south and the Upper Main Valley/Coburger Land to the west.

With excellent links to the A9  - the motorway connecting Munich and Berlin - this erstwhile border region was a popular leisure area for the people of West Berlin. Since the reunification the role played by the region’s amazing diversity of attractions has become increasingly clearer as a link between the traditional and the modern.
