The Franconian Forest Nature Park
It would be wrong to think that the natural beauties and the leisure opportunities are all there to discover in the nature reserve: The Franconian Forest is also rich in culture.
Not only have Alexander v. Humboldt and Jean Paul both left their mark on the area but Lucas Cranach also grew up here. The numerous palaces and castles ranging from Castle Lauenstein, Water Palace Mitwitz, Rosenberg in Kronach – considered one of Germany’s largest and most well-preserved castle complexes – right through to the Plassenburg in Kulmbach are not only tangible evidence of the region’s rich heritage but also provide excellent settings for the staging of concerts, exhibitions, and contemporary open-air theatre such as the Faust Festival in Kronach.
The region is also home to a wide diversity of museums: traditional crafts of lace-making, rafting and weaving together with steam engines and mills all provide an insight into the region’s past whilst contemporary exhibitions showcasing Picasso and Hundertwasser are also on offer.
