For many years the Franconian Forest bordered former East Germany and was thus somewhat off the well-used north/south, east/west transfer routes. This period of the region’s history is reflected in the well-preserved customs and traditions.

The Franconian Forest’s typical characteristics of wood and water come together in the region’s tradition of rafting which was long one of the area’s most important sources of income. Where once rafters worked a hard-earned living on the waterways up to Amsterdam today tourists can enjoy a pleasurable and liquid trip – in more ways than one – on the Wild Rodach.
